How this basic calculator works

• You tell us how much you spend per month in today’s dollars.
• We convert that to annual spending and subtract any expected annual income in retirement.
• We fetch the last 10 years of S&P 500 returns (x) and inflation (z) from rates.json.
• Your real return is x − z. That’s how fast your money grows after inflation.
• Your required capital G is calculated as: G = (Annual Spending − Income) ÷ (x − z).
• You can save up to 10 snapshots of your calculation to compare different spending levels or dates.
